Paper Thickness Chart

The tables below show the approximate caliper (or thickness) for a single sheet of paper of various grades and basis weights. Caliper is expressed in thousandths of an inch (or in some cases, as much as hundred thousands of an inch). With these tables you can quickly look up the caliper for the following kinds of paper:

Postal Cards

U.S. Postal Service Paper Stock Dimensions,
Shape, and Caliper Standards for Automation Letters

Each letter-size piece must be rectangular and:

1. For HEIGHT, no more than 6.125 or less than 3.5 inches high.
2. For LENGTH, no more than 11.5 or less than 5 inches long.
3. For THICKNESS, no more than 0.25 inches, or less than...
   • 0.007 inch thick if no more than 4.25 inches high and 6 inches long; or
   • 0.009 inch thick if more than 4.25 inches high or 6 inches long, or both.
