MSI/MSF
Use this calculator to estimate thousands of square inches in a roll of paper of a given grade and basis weight (see the example below). The calculator also tells you how many thousands of square feet are in the roll. When filling in these fields, use decimal fractions where necessary; and give all lengths in inches and weight in pounds.

Example
Find the MSI and MSF for a 900-pound roll of 80# Book paper.
Formula:

Weight of Roll (Basis Weight ÷ [Area of Basic Size]) × 2 |
= | MSI | ÷ 144 = | MSF |
Equation:

900 (80 ÷ [25 × 38]) × 2 |
= | 5,344 MSI | ÷ 144 = | 37.111 MSF |
Note that in the example above the result for the MSI is rounded to nearest whole number, and MSF is rounded to three decimal places.
